MCU Rewatch: Iron Man 2 (2010)

So, lately, my family has started rewatching every movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While I'm uncertain if this is going to be a trend, I know I'm for sure hooked on rewatching every MCU movie before Black Widow's release in May 2020. Bear in mind, further content will have spoilers!

(I skipped "The Incredible Hulk (2008)". It's a good movie, but it has very little relevance to the MCU. The only thing I got out of it was that the Hulk was immune to Gamma Radiation, which helped explain a bit of Avengers: Endgame, but beyond that, it's really got nothing important to the MCU itself.)

"If you can make God bleed, people will cease to believe in him." -Ivan Vanko, Iron Man 2 (2010)

This quote by Ivan Vanko is one that I actually don't like, but I mention it because, in Infinity War, it has a major impact. ("All that for a drop of blood?" -Thanos, to Tony Stark. Okay, Thanos isn't a god, but the point isn't that, it's that Tony Stark proved Thanos could be beaten.) Also, it's a central point in the movie. Vanko had a point: if you can hurt a hero, people will stop thinking that hero is invincible. They'll begin to lose faith.

That is Vanko's goal throughout Iron Man 2. He designs his own miniature arc reactor, similar to Tony Stark's, and creates whips that channel the electricity of his arc reactor. Then, he moves to confront Tony Stark, who is currently dying. Tony Stark's arc reactor is missing some crucial element, and without it, the legend will inevitably die. He starts doing some drastic things: signing his company over to Pepper Potts, partying, and of course, racing.

In the middle of a Formula One race, the very one Stark took part in, Vanko puts his new electrowhips to good use and destroys Stark's car, and it's only thanks to a portable Iron Man suit that he manages to survive. Ivan Vanko is sent to prison.

But then Justin Hammer, CEO of Hammer Industries (rival of Stark Industries), breaks Vanko out of prison, and has Vanko modify a bunch of prototype Iron Man suits to work. Vanko turns them into drones, planning to use them to kill start in the upcoming Stark Expo event.

Meanwhile, James Rhodes confronts the half-insane Tony Stark. When it doesn't end well, Rhodes steals one of Stark's Iron Man suits and confronts him again. The two face off, and Stark loses in the end. Rhodes turns the suit over to the military, who then allows Justin Hammer to look over it.

By the time of the Stark Expo, Tony manages to discover a new element, and uses it to power his new arc reactor and suit. It completely reverses the damage his previous arc reactor did, and ensures that Tony won't have to worry about his own creation killing him anymore. Ivan Vanko calls Tony Stark, and while the young billionaire can't trace the call in time, he figures out that Vanko is somewhere in Hammer Industries Headquarters. He goes to the Stark Expo and confronts Justin Hammer, who has just unveiled his new Iron Man Drones, military-grade Iron Man suits that operate without human interference.

Then the drones go haywire, and James Rhodes (in his newly upgraded Iron Man suit) uses control. He uses his access to his suit's HUD to warn Stark of threats, but he can't control his suit, which begins targeting the real Iron Man. Meanwhile, Black Widow (who has been acting as Stark's assistant all this time) and Happy (Stark's bodyguard) assault Hammer Industries Headquarters. They find the computer controlling all the suits, but Ivan Vanko has fled. Black Widow hacks into the computer and frees Rhodes' suit, allowing him to fight alongside Iron Man instead of against him.

The two finish off the Iron Man Drones, just in time to face a new threat: Ivan Vanko, in his own heavily modified Iron Man suit. After a bit of fighting and a lot of improvising, Stark and Rhodes take Vanko down.

End Credits Scene: Agent Phil Coulson, a S.H.I.E.L.D. operative, arrives at a site in New Mexico. He observes it momentarily before pulling out his phone and calling Director Nick Fury. He explains that he found "it". Then you see a strange hammer stuck in the ground in the center of a crater. As the next movie, Thor, will reveal: that hammer is MjĆølnir.

  1. I am so sleep deprived, every time I read "Justin Hammer" I imagine a Justin Beiver/MC hammer hybrid with bad hair wearing hammer pants... someone send help. XD

This is a great summary of the movie! It covered everything breifly and accurately *limp and tired thumbs up*

    1. My friend, no help I can send you will actually help at this point xD

Not as briefly as I did the first Iron Man movie, though...

    2. It's too late. I'm already gone.

True. But this movie is a bit less straight-forward as the first.

  2. Err...The Incredible Hulk is part of the MCU. Edward Norton was supposed to continue as Bruce Banner before the change to Mark Ruffalo. That part in Avengers were Bruce says "I shot a bullet into my mouth...and the other guy spat it out." was the original opening scene for the Incredible Hulk. And if the Leader is in the MCU though, I doubt they would use him from the movie setup though.
Also the MCU is set to fail if they actually do go with the "DiVeRsItY" setup. Diversity is needed, but don't shove it in our faces!
This took about 10 minutes of well thought out typing to comment. :P

    1. Yeah, but it has little relevance to the MCU, like I said in the post. You could never watch The Incredible Hulk and everything still makes perfect sense. It is a good movie, and it's fun seeing the Hulk's backstory, it's just not important to the MCU timeline itself (even if it is in it)

My Talent (Poem by Mark Borne)

Many places, I've come to know, People of different cultures, too; They all have their thing, Something that they can do, But not me, not yet, My talent has yet to show up. I write and write, plots And twists and poems and Even the rare favorite of The readers I've lured And ensnared in my blog. Yet deep inside, I force myself To write the words that meet The lines of text and thoughts. Then I turn to run, and Find the wind upon my face As I escape my life, But it always catches up, And the worries I face Distract me, making the Outside world obsolete. Even in reading, I find Myself buried in stories That show misfortune in the Lives of fictional characters, Directly only to do as they Were told by the writer. And yet, in stories there is a Beauty unmatched by reality, A world that eventually Results in kindness and Peace and excitement. And being in those worlds, If only for a mere moment, Is my hobby. If only I could Be the character in the ...

Nexus Mad Libs

I assume most of you are familiar with what Mad Libs are. Basically, you're given a bunch of blanks to fill in, and you do so without knowing what the story is. Each blank has a part of speech labeling it, and that blank needs something that fits the part of speech. For example: Adjective: ________ --> Adjective: Explosive In the end, we usually have a hilarious end result that makes no sense whatsoever. One example is this (which is a real result I got once with my siblings): "Another way to help you fall asleep faster is drinking a nuclear glass of warm vinegar ." First, let's go over some rules. Obviously, keep it family friendly. This still goes for all blog content. Do not submit two words in a row. Submit one, and when someone else does one, you may do another. Submit through comments. That'll make it easier for me to assemble the final result. The category is Medieval Heroes . Here are the blanks: Adjective: Constipated (Kyra) Per...
