(REPOSTED) Why I'm Happy (Poem by Mark Swift)

You ask me why I'm happy,
Why I smile in pain.
Why I'm strong in hardship,
Why I laugh all day.
---
I have a friend to guide me,
He shows the way.
He takes away my worries,
Then I feel okay.
---
I have a friend to guide me,
He's with me every day.
You'll never guess his name,
He's closer than you think.
---
That's why I am happy,
Why I smile in pain.
Why I'm strong in hardship,
And why I laugh all day.

  1. Is his name Mark? (Was going to use your real name, but felt you probably want to keep that private)
This is sweet. Happy poems aren't my specialty but I like this.
Also, I need that friend haha

    1. Lol No, not me
Note the last line of the third stanza: "He's closer than you think." You might be surprised if I tell you who it is, but I think you'd also write me off, afterwards :P

    2. Who is it?
      I won't write you off.
Oh!! You mean god, don't you? This is religious, isn't it?

    3. Yes, God; although, more specifically, Jesus Christ
People often say it's crazy, but trusting in Him really does give me a strength I can't really describe

    4. I don't know why I didn't get that from the start. I guess I supposed it was regarding optimism, and that yourself would need to be your closest friend to be happy, and that the line "He's closer than you think" proved it. Boy, was I wrong xD. Sorry about the misinterpretation. I respect your religion and your faith in it, I'm just not religious. I wouldn't write you off for something like that, I mean the quote in your profile is from the bible xD

    5. Lol I'm honestly a bit shocked that you initially thought that, and honestly a bit horrified of whether I'm being a good friend or not. If there's one thing I try to show to others, it's that friends are the most valuable earthly treasure (from my perspective)
Lol Yeah, it is. It doesn't provide as much strength as it used to, unfortunately, so I might change it to something else, but that quote is Biblical...

    6. Why would that make you question the value of your friendship?

    7. Well, I usually aim for helping my friends as much as possible; if I manage to write a poem where a friend of mine thinks, "You need to be your closest friend to be happy" is the theme, I begin to question whether or not I'm doing it right :P

    8. Oh, no, not at all. I thought it was more about self reflection than it was. About yes, being your closest friend to be happy, but not in a selfish or self centered kind of way. Nothing against your success in friendship, you are indeed a good friend, I just horribly misinterpreted the poem. Although, it seems the poem could work in both contexts.

Would You Rather...? (#1)

These "Would You Rathers" are small, but they're meant to start debates. Debates, not arguments! Anyways, here's the first one: "In a mystery novel, would you rather have a friend by your side helping you while risking his/her own life... ...or would you rather have your friend safe at home counting on you to solve the mystery and come out safely?"
